Kishore Kanhere founder of Ankit Construction story is quite exceptional and Inspiring. His success story is more than just mere words. Since Childhood it was Kishore Kanhere’s dream to have his own business. So entrepreneurship had always been an option for him. Much against the wishes of his family, Kishore Kanhere decided to start a business immediately after graduating from the Nagpur Mahavidyalaya.
As being from middle class family background, Kishore Kanhere’s parents wanted him to have a secure job in a government agency, which was the best option for a 21-year-old. However, the enterprenurer in Mr. Kanhere was firm on his decision and was always on the look out for that one bright business ideas. He found that opportunity in the form of manufacturing of air coolers, as his hometown, Nagpur, is known for its extreme weather, with the temperature soaring to 47 degree Celsius in summer. So, in 1984, he thought of setting up an air cooler business from his home.
With a seed capital of Rs 3,000, out of which he borrowed Rs 2,000 from his mother and added the savings from his pocket money. His first client was one of his own relative. Since his offer price was much lower than that in the market, he convinced him to buy his product with a two-year warranty.
That was the beginning of Kishore Kanhere’s entrepreneurial journey. Over the next four years, word-of-mouth publicity helped his business to expand his customer base beyond the relatives, neighbours and friends. While the business was booming, he began to encounter two problems.
One, his business was seasonal, and two, his margins had begun to fall due to the increasing competition. So, by 1989-90, he started thinking of changing the line of business. Fortuitously, around this time, Kishore Kanhere found out that one of the offices of the Forest Department in Nagpur required minor renovation and repair. The work would have cost around Rs 25,000, and though he had never ventured into this line, he took up the challenge. Since being his first step in the field, he wasn't bothered about the margin.
The successful completion of this assignment gave Kishore Kanhere the confidence to take up construction-related projects. He then started accepting small contracts for repair work and also bagged sublet jobs for several projects outsourced by bigger contractors.
Kishore Kanhere invested the profit that he made in real estate, acquiring small plots of land in and around Nagpur. So, in the four years that he dabbled in this business, Kishore Kanhere invested very small amount in realty. The next milestone year for Kishore Kanhere was 1996, when he started his current company, Ankit Constructions. And since then the journey of visionary Kishore Kanhere to fullfill the dreams of hundreds of Indians across the country continued...
